Song and His Friends works with emerging composers and performers who are interested in intimate chamber and recital performances in Sydney.
The series is not a competition. It is a curated platform for early-career musicians who want to present prepared repertoire, collaborate across classical and contemporary traditions, and share art music with local audiences in close listening environments.
For selected projects, Song and His Friends may support:
- venue hire
- basic promotion and publicity
- ticketing arrangements
- basic audio and video documentation
- artist presentation on the series website and social media
- inclusion in the Song and His Friends concert archive
- APRA AMCOS licensing or reporting processes where applicable
Yurun Song currently covers the upfront production costs of selected concerts. If a concert generates net profit after deducting production costs — including venue hire, promotion, ticketing, documentation, and any applicable licensing-related costs — the remaining profit will be distributed to the performers according to the agreement for that concert.
Emerging performers may propose recital or chamber programmes. Young composers may submit works for ensembles of up to five players to be considered for future programming. Suitable works may be added to the series waiting list and programmed when appropriate performers, instrumentation, and concert contexts become available.
Young composers may also propose a complete performer group for a future concert. Where the proposal fits the artistic direction of the series, Song and His Friends may consider supporting the event through venue hire, promotion, ticketing, and documentation.

For Performer
Song and His Friends works with young and emerging performers interested in intimate recital and chamber music performances in Sydney.
Selected performers are welcome to propose solo, duo, or chamber programmes for ensembles of up to five players. Each proposed concert should form an approximately one-hour programme, combining repertoire the performers already know well with one suitable contemporary work selected from the series’ composer-submitted work list, in consultation with the series.
The selected work will take into account the performer’s instrument, technical capacity, rehearsal time, ensemble size, and the overall character of the programme. The aim is not to force unsuitable repertoire onto performers, but to create meaningful connections between young performers, young composers, and local audiences.
Performers interested in participating are asked to provide a short performance video or video link as evidence of their performance level. Current undergraduate and postgraduate music students, as well as recent graduates, are especially encouraged to get in touch.
If a programme requires piano accompaniment, performers may bring their own pianist. Where a pianist needs to be arranged through the series, additional accompanist fees may apply. Please contact us to discuss the details.

For Composer
Song and His Friends works with young composers who are interested in having their chamber and recital works considered for future performances in Sydney.
Composers may submit works for solo instrument, duo, trio, quartet, or quintet. Submitted works may be added to the series’ composer-submitted work list and considered for future programming when suitable performers, instrumentation, rehearsal time, and concert contexts become available.
The series does not guarantee immediate programming. Instead, it aims to create a practical bridge between young composers and emerging performers by gradually matching suitable works with performers who are technically and artistically able to present them.
If a composer proposes their own performer group, the proposal should not consist of only one short work. In this case, the composer and performer group should be prepared to present a complete programme of approximately one hour, which may include the composer’s own work alongside other suitable repertoire. Where the proposal fits the artistic direction of the series, Song and His Friends may consider supporting the event through venue hire, basic promotion, ticketing arrangements, and basic performance documentation.
Submitted works should include:
- a clear PDF score
- a recording, live recording, or MIDI mock-up
- instrumentation details
- approximate duration
- a short programme note
- performer requirements or technical notes, if relevant
By submitting a work, the composer confirms that they have the right to share the submitted score and audio materials with Song and His Friends for review and programming consideration. The composer also grants Song and His Friends permission to share the score and recording or MIDI mock-up with relevant performers for the purpose of assessing playability, rehearsal feasibility, and potential programming.
Submission does not transfer copyright ownership. The composer retains copyright in their work.
Scores must be professionally prepared, clearly notated, and reasonably playable for the intended instruments. Works with unclear notation, incomplete materials, or writing that does not reasonably reflect the practical possibilities of the instruments may be returned for revision before they can be added to the waiting list.
If only minor notation issues are present, or if the composer hopes to use the rehearsal process to learn more about instrumental writing and improve the work, they should discuss this with Yurun Song in advance. The aim is to support young composers while also respecting performers’ rehearsal time and ensuring that all programmed works meet the series’ quality guidelines.
Where a submitted work is programmed, Song and His Friends will aim to follow appropriate performance licensing or reporting processes, including APRA AMCOS where applicable.
