Biography

Music does not explain a person
it leaves space for memory and imagination.

Biography (For my audience)

Yurun Song is a composer based in Sydney whose works are published by Universal Edition. His music often begins with one ordinary person in a particular state of mind — uncertain, waiting, longing, resisting, or simply trying to remain dignified.

Rather than telling fixed stories or painting clear images, his music starts from sound, form, and movement. These human states are not described literally, but transformed into tension, rhythm, and shape, leaving space for listeners to bring their own memories and imagination.

He also works as a conductor and music educator.

Biography (For Professional)

Yurun Song is a Sydney-based composer, conductor, and music educator whose works are published by Universal Edition. His music has been performed by ensembles including the Sydney Youth Orchestra, Sydney Chinese Orchestra, and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Chinese Music Ensemble.

Song’s work is shaped by form, tension, and the inner states of an ordinary person. Rather than treating music as a direct image or fixed narrative, he works with sound, movement, structure, and instrumental colour to transform human uncertainty into musical form. His practice reflects an interest in how listeners form memory, imagination, and meaning through musical experience.

Born in Xi’an, China, Song holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. He studied composition with Amanda Cole, Carl Vine, Luis Sagile, Natalie Williams, and Peggy Polias, and received conducting and ensemble leadership training from Elizabeth Scott and Stephen Williams. In 2025, he received the Platinum Award in the Brahms International Online Music Competition.

Alongside composition, Song works as a conductor and music educator, with experience in ensemble direction, score preparation, repertoire adaptation, and public performance projects.
