A Sorrowful Song That Might Become Popular (For Solo Vibraphone)

Midi Recording, from Note Performer

This piece emerged from a process of spontaneous composition, aiming to preserve the immediacy and authenticity of the moment. Although improvisatory in origin, the work unfolds in a clearly defined ABA structure, with the contrasting middle section offering a shift in texture and direction, giving the piece a sense of formal coherence. The music prominently features dissonant intervals of seconds, creating a floating tension and a sense of harmonic ambiguity. A linear descending motion in the lower register adds weight and a continuous downward momentum. Harmonica ly,the piece is grounded in minor triads, which are subtly transformed through layering and variation to produce a fluid harmonic texture. Written specifica ly for solo vibraphone, the piece makes extensive use of techniques unique to the instrument, including pedal control, sustained resonance, and textural layering. These elements are employed not only for their sonic effect, but also to explore the instrument’s spatial and timbral possibilities.
